What is the VIX today?
The VIX was 28.18 on Nov 5, 2026, up 11.57 points (69.7%) from 16.61 the previous business day. A year earlier (Nov 5, 2025), the reading was 18.01.
What is considered a high VIX?
There is no official threshold. The most useful comparison is with the index's own history: readings near the bottom of its recent range signal calm, while a jump far above its typical level signals fear. The 1-year and 5-year highs and lows above give that context.
Why does the VIX go up when stocks go down?
When prices fall, investors rush to buy S&P 500 put options for protection, which raises option prices and the volatility implied by them. Rising markets usually see less demand for protection, so the VIX drifts lower.
Can you invest in the VIX directly?
No. The index itself cannot be bought. Traders use VIX futures, options or exchange-traded products based on futures, which behave differently from the index and can lose value steadily over time.
