Frequently asked questions
How does an inflation calculator work?
It compares the consumer price index (CPI) in two periods. If the index is twice as high today as in a past year, prices have doubled on average, so $100 then buys what about $200 buys now. We use the CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), the index the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses for its own calculator, with each past year's annual average.
Why does the answer differ from other calculators?
Calculators differ in whether they use annual averages or a specific month, and in which month counts as "today". This page uses annual averages for past years and the latest published month for today, so a result can differ by a few percent from one that compares, say, January to January.
Does the CPI measure my own cost of living?
Not exactly. The CPI tracks the average price change of a fixed basket of goods and services bought by urban consumers. Your own inflation depends on what you buy and where you live — rent, food and gasoline, for example, can rise much faster or slower than the average.
Where can I see current prices of everyday items?
Our everyday prices tracker shows today's average US prices of eggs, milk, beef, coffee, gas and electricity, back to 1980.
