Frequently asked questions

What time does the stock market open?

The NYSE and Nasdaq open at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time (8:30 a.m. Central, 7:30 a.m. Mountain, 6:30 a.m. Pacific) on every trading day. Pre-market trading through brokers can start as early as 4:00 a.m. ET.

What time does the stock market close?

The regular session ends at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time (3:00 p.m. Central, 2:00 p.m. Mountain, 1:00 p.m. Pacific). On a few days a year — such as the day after Thanksgiving — it closes early at 1:00 p.m. ET. After-hours trading continues until 8:00 p.m. ET.

Is the stock market open on weekends?

No. US stock exchanges trade Monday through Friday only. Orders placed over the weekend are executed when the market opens on Monday (or the next trading day).

What is pre-market and after-hours trading?

Extended-hours sessions let investors trade outside 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET through electronic networks. Volume is thinner, spreads are wider and prices can be more volatile, so many brokers accept only limit orders in those sessions.
