What is Return on Equity (ROE)?

Net income divided by shareholders' equity.

ROE measures how much profit a company earns on the capital its shareholders have put in. Consistently high ROE (above 15–20%) is a mark of a strong business, but check debt: borrowing heavily shrinks equity and inflates ROE, and big buybacks can push equity negative and make ROE meaningless.
