What is Ex-Dividend Date?

The first trading day on which a buyer of the stock will NOT receive the next dividend.

To collect a dividend you must own the stock before the ex-dividend date. On that morning the share price typically opens lower by roughly the dividend amount. With T+1 settlement in the US, the ex-date and record date are now usually the same day.
